Program Description

Living And Learning Through Loss offers a compassionate and skilled Clinical Counsellor trained to help you understand the grieving process and develop effective coping skills.  Interviewed and screened candidates are invited to enter the program where weekly sessions promote self-esteem, problem solving skills, psychological resilience, self-expression, and build positive relationships with peers and adults.  It is a positive, fun learning experience.

The program offers an eight-week grief and loss support group at no cost to you. You will meet for two hours per week with a maximum of ten other individuals who are also experiencing loss.

The goals of the group are:

  • to create an open and supportive environment that promotes a sharing of information, ideas and feelings regarding issues of death and loss;
  • to develop an understanding and awareness of normal grief reactions;
  • to identify and enhance specific coping skills and tasks to help deal with death and loss; and
  • to look forward to the future.

The learning objectives are:

  • an acceptance of the reality of loss;
  • a willingness to experience the pain of grief;
  • an adjustment to the environment in which the loss has occurred; and
  • a withdrawal of emotional energy away from the loss and towards investment in the future.

The program also trains counsellors and youth workers who wish to volunteer to co-lead one or more of the support groups with the counsellor.
