About Us

The Living and Learning Through Loss Program is designed to provide you, at no charge, with both the support and counselling that makes healing possible. Healing starts by exploring and sharing your emotions with yourself and with others who are also experiencing grief and loss.

VISION:  The Living and Learning Through Loss Society understands the social and economic impact that grief and loss issues can have on youth, their families and society.  We envision a community where all youth have access to counselling, education, support and resources relating to grief and loss.

Our History

The Living and Learning Through Loss (LLTL) program for young adults was founded in 1988 by the late Sandra Elder (Ph.D. Counselling Psychology). She recognized that there were many young adults who had experienced significant losses and were having difficulties in processing their feelings and adjusting to the ensuing changes. Through Sandra’s efforts to ensure ongoing support of teenagers, the LLTL non-profit organization was formed. In 1994, the “Friends of Living and Learning Through Loss ™” charitable society was created to raise funds to provide support for young people who have experienced loss, and to enhance public awareness of this program. Since this time, hundreds of young adults have been helped.
Grief and Loss Support Groups offer a supportive environment where you can explore your own responses to loss and share among understanding others. The groups are led by a professional counsellor trained in grief and loss issues. The group is two hours long, and meets once a week for two months.

Short-term Individual Counselling is available before the grief and loss support group begins, if you need additional support or options for other resources in your community.

Crisis Response and Support is available to you and your friends in the event of an extraordinary crisis.

Education workshops about grief and loss are provided in schools for those of you who may want to provide your friends with help and support through their loss. Day long workshops include psychology, communication, peer counselling and leadership classes.
